“Make This ONE Change In Your Chords, And Sound Like A Pro Right Away!”
Dear Friend:
Have you ever wondered why the chords you play don’t sound as good as the chords professionals play?
You decide to go hear some music at a club and notice that the pianist is totally immersed in the music.
As she plays, you hear the passion and her true love of the music radiating throughout the room.
Your mind wanders and begins bringing happy thoughts and very special intimate memories of moments of your past.
It feels good!
It’s indescribable.
Drifting into a very special place, your own private space.
What just happened?
You have been taken on a musical journey. A very special journey. And it feels good!
Those chords that she has been playing sound and FEEL good!
How the heck is she doing that?
Why don’t the chords I play sound that good?
I play inversions, but still I can’t get that sound.
Arghh…..
You’re in luck!
She has finished playing and is taking a break before the next set.
As you approach her, your heart all of a sudden sinks to the bottom of your stomach.
But, you’ve got to know…
How do you make your chords sound soooo good?
“Voicings. Chord Voicings!”
You ask, what do you mean?
Splitting and spreading your chords between both hands.
If you want to play a C Major 7th chord, for instance, you can play 2 notes in your left hand and 2 notes in your right hand.
Take a C Major scale: C – D – E – F – G – A – B – C (Do-Re-Mi-Fa-So-La-Ti-Do) and number your tones.
C(1) – D(2) – E(3) – F(4) – G(5) – A(6) – B(7)
Now, with either your left hand or right hand, play 1-3-5-7 (C-E-G-B) at the same time.
This is a C Major 7th chord.
Playing it like this sounds very bland. Nothing exciting at all.
Let’s play the same chord again, but with the notes arranged in a different order.
In your left hand play 1 and 7. That is put your little finger on C and play the B that is higher with your thumb.
Now play 3(E) and 5(G) with your right hand with your thumb and middle finger respectively.
Make sure the E you play is the first E higher than the B your thumb is playing with your left hand.
Hit all 4 notes together and listen to the sound you get.
Sounds good doesn’t it? Much better than the chord sounded when you first played it.
You’ve just ‘opened up’ your sound because your chord is spread over a wider distance on the piano.
This is called Voicing your chords.
Here is another example of a C Major 7th Chord Voicing.
With your left hand, play 1(C) and 5(G) with your little finger on C and your thumb on G.
Forgot to mention the C you play with your little finger should be 2 octaves lower than middle C.
Now, with your right hand, play 3(E) and 7(B) with your thumb on E and your little finger on B.
As you can see, this is a lower voicing on your piano, but it has a very rich and different sound from the C Major 7th chord voicing you played above.
“As you start to become more experienced playing different chord voicings, you will start letting the sound of what you play be your guide.”
These are examples that are just applied to the Major 7th chords.
Once you start altering these tones in the chord, you create other types of chords and other possibilities.
Here is a chart of 5 Chord Types that are created when you start altering the tones.
Chord Type | Scale Tones | Notes |
Major 7 | 1 – 3 – 5 – 7 | C – E – G – B |
Dominant 7 | 1 – 3 – 5 – b7 | C – E – G – Bb |
Minor 7 | 1 – b3 – 5 – b7 | C – Eb – G – Bb |
Minor 7b5 | 1 – b3 – b5 – b7 | C – E – G – B |
Diminished 7 | 1 – b3 – b5 – bb7(6) | C – Eb – Gb – A |
